Kitulgala is a small village west of Sri Lanka, just 80km from Colombo, on the banks of the beautiful Kelani River. The name of Kitulgala is derived from the Kitual Palm tree (Sinhala: Sago Palm tree) that abound in the village of Kitulgala. Kitul palm syrup is used to prepare numerous traditional Sinhalese sweets. It is also fermented to make palm wine. The pith is used to make sago, and the fibres to make rope. Kithulgala has most of the rainforest bird species that are found at the World Biosphere Reserve at Sinharaja, although in lower numbers.

Aberdeen Waterfall

The cascade is the eighteenth most elevated cascade in Sri Lanka. Old stories say that there is a tunnel between Aberdeen falls and the neighboring Laxapana cascade. Aberdeen Waterfall is secured with a major stone complex behind. A small observation platform is constructed close the natural pool below the Aberdeen Falls. Despite this visitors’ terrace, travellers are rarely seen at Aberdeen Falls. It’s still an off-the-beaten-path destination.

Belilena Cave

Belilena is an enormous, notable cavern from which proof of human life has been recorded. The Archeological Department of Sri Lanka excavated and explored Belilena Cave between 1978 and 1983, discovering human remains as well as objects of cultural importance such as bone tools, stone tools and evidence of fire. Thangamale Bird Sanctuary

Thangamale is a woody zone on the hillside near Adisham Hall it is popularly identified as the “Thangamale Bird Sanctuary”. This area is home to a plethora of birds and butterflies. Spanning an area of 131 hectares. Visitors can traverse the jungle by a 4.3 km long and relaxing walk.
