NEGOMBO
Negombo can be considered as a coastal area because it
has become one of the islands biggest fishing ports, where over 500 edible
species of fish inhabit the sea and the inland lagoon. Negombo which is called
as “Meegamuva” in Sinhala means “Village of the honeycomb”. Negombo was one of
the most important sources of cinnamon during the Dutch era, and there are
still reminders of the European days. The Portuguese built a fort in Negombo to
take over the trade of Cinnamon to the west during the Jaffna Kingdom.
The Negombo lagoon supports so many distinct species
of flora, fauna and as well as another species of birds and variety of animals.
It is a major local and tourist attraction primarily for sightseeing and
boating tours.

Muthurajawela Wetlands
Situated in the southern part of the Negombo lagoon in Sri Lanka is a jewel of a marsh called Muthurajawela. Muthurajawela marsh is a major part of the city tourism and it is home to huge flora and fauna that beautify the nature.

St. Sebastian’s Church
St. Sebastian’s Church is a roman catholic located in Katuwapitiya. It’s symbolized as the heart of catholic people from all over the country. Unfortunately, the church was faced a terrorist attack on 21 of April, 2019 Easter Sunday. Media revealed at least 93 people killed at the church and around 45 children also died. However, now it is re-built again.
Nigambo fish market
Nigambo fish market is a very large place selling fresh fish, dry fish, crabs, prawns, and more. Quite fishy and an amazing amount of fish drying in the sun. also, wonder who essentially ate them all There were acres of fish laid out. The walk through the fresh market just showed the huge variety for sale in all shapes and sizes. Really worth a visit and highly really recommended
Negombo Lagoon
This is one of another lagoons in Nigambo, Sri Lanka. which is famous for crabs and prawns. You can ride a boat trip on the lagoon via kingfisher tours on the beach road. The boat ride was fantastic. Lots of birds can be seen, also saw monitor lizards and monkeys. The boat ride takes about 4000-6000lkr conditional on if u want to go to the ocean. This lagoon has some history, used this lagoon and the canal in the Dutch era in Sri Lanka for transference and other stuff. Agurukamulla Temple
This is a temple which is located at Angurukaramulla, Negambo. The idea of Buddhism is depicted with wall murals and sculptures in this beautiful temple. This is a very important Temple for the native Buddhist community. In the near locality, there is a School for young Monks.
