NILAVELI

Is a stretch of beach which is situated approximately 16 kilometres North of Trincomalle, passing a thriving lagoon on either side and lush coconut palm groves and hordes of cattle, note that the people in the area are predominantly Hindu and consider the cows sacred. Arriving at the hamlet of “Errakkandy”, a sharp right turn will take you down a gravel road to Nilaweli beach, almost a kilometre of in length, white sandy beach with gentle surf. Across the beach about two kilometres into the ocean you will see the famous pigeon island, named due to rock pigeons roosting on it by the hundreds and crystal clear water around it to snorkel on to the clear depths of a reef. Further up North you will see a cluster of reddish rocks which are referred to as the red rock beach.

Pigeon Island National Park

Pigeon Island consists of two islands; large pigeon island and small pigeon island. The large pigeon island is fringed by a coral reef, and is about 200 m long and 100 m wide. The national park is situated within the dry zone of Sri Lanka. You can see over 100 species of coral and 300 coral reef fish recorded in the area. Sea Turtles and Blacktip Reef Sharks are also commonly seen in the shallow coral areas.

Velgam Vehera

Velgam Vehera is one of the most venerated sites of worship in Trincomalee. The temple is also known as Vilgam Rajamaha Viharaya. Trincomalee District, Sri Lanka. It is also known to Hindus as Natanar Kovil. Historically Velgam Vehera was one of important Buddhist temples in the country, worshiped by both Sinhala and Tamil Buddhists.

Hot Water Springs

Kanniya Hot Water Springs is an archaeologically protected site with hot wells situated in Kanniya in Trincomalee. It consists of seven wells which form a square shape. The water is not swimming, and you need to scoop up her bucket and pour on yourself. People in this area believe that this hot water is good for some skin deceases and it has healing power for Arthritis and Rheumatic. The wells were built in the heyday of the Kingdom of Anuradhapura and were in the territory of a Buddhist monastery, the ruins of which are in the territory near the wells.

Explore Fort Fredrick

Fort Fredrick is a memory of a different time in Sri Lanka before gaining conventionality. there are two kovils Exploring. One is the Koneshwaram kovil and the other is the Gokanna Raja Monastery. The Koneshwaram kovil is a beautifully colored and decorated Hindu kovil. The kovil holds regular services throughout the day and visitors can actually wander inside. The Koneshwaram kovil is a beautifully colored and decorated Hindu kovil. we got to watch a ceremony and enjoy some fruit offered to us by the worshipers. It was a really neat experience and the inside of the kovil was also very beautiful. The kovil is free to enter but you must remove your shoes and cover your knees and shoulders.

Uppuveli Beach

Upuveli Beach is a famous beach where many people stay. It is located in the Trincomalee district near Nilaveli Beach in Sri Lanka. This makes it the picture-perfect place to head to for the day and enjoy a meal and drink by the ocean.

Visit the Maritime Museum and Dutch Bay

I know you didn’t come to Nilaveli to travel to a busy Sri Lankan city, but there were a few things to do in Trincomalee really worth checking out and my favorite was the Maritime Museum. One of the best things about it was that they have tour guides who take you around the museum and explain all of the exhibits was.

Relax at the beautiful Marble Beach

The beach is actually a good hour’s drive from Nilaveli. The community side is a popular area for locals as it’s free to enter this area without buying anything. But, the restaurant, resort side does require you to make a purchase at the restaurant or be a guest at the resort
